Comparison of Error Types and Qualitative Analysis of Correct Responses in a Confrontation Naming Test for Subtypes of Mild Cognitive Impairment
Kim Soo-Ryon

Abstract
Objectives: It is important to examine the characteristics of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) subtypes due to their various patterns of cognitive impairment. This study carried out a confrontation naming test for three MCI subtypes (amnestic single-domain MCI [asMCI], amnestic multiple-domain MCI [amMCI], and non-amnestic MCI [non-aMCI]) and a normal elderly group to investigate differential naming performance.

Methods: Ninety-six MCI patients (27 with asMCI, 39 with amMCI, and 30 with non-aMCI) and 30 elderly control subjects performed the K-BNT-15, a short version of the Korean version-the Boston Naming Test. The four groups were compared by total scores, error types (i.e., visuopercep-tual, semantic, phonological, unrelated, and other errors), and qualitative analysis of correct responses (i.e., self-correction and time-delayed responses).

Results: First, the total scores were significantly lower in amMCI and asMCI than in the normal controls and non-aMCI. Second, only the semantic error type showed a significant difference between MCI and normal elderly. Third, self-correction and time-delayed response ratios were higher in patients with MCI than in the normal elderly. In particular, time-delayed responses were frequently found in MCI subtypes with memory impairment, and self-correction responses were frequently found in MCI subtypes with other cognitive impairments.

Conclusion; These findings suggest that MCI subtypes exhibit different patterns of naming deficits, which may result from a breakdown of semantic memory, lexicosemantic processing, or other cognitive abilities such as executive functions. Therefore, error types and qualitative analysis of correct responses in confrontation naming tests could be useful for identifying MCI subtypes.
